EuroQSS project
13 partners are advancing the European quantum software infrastructure to enable industrial adoption – Fraunhofer IKS coordinates the project
Kickoff for EuroQSS: The European research and innovation project aims to develop an open, interoperable quantum software stack, balancing hardware specifics with abstraction. This infrastructure is intended to support hybrid workflows across different quantum computers and classical high-performance computing systems. Thirteen European partners from industry and academia are participating in EuroQSS; the project will run from October 2026 through the end of September 2029.
The EU project EuroQSS (Universal European Quantum Software Stack) intends to provide a unified software stack in Europe that significantly simplifies access to quantum resources while enabling seamless collaboration between classical and quantum-based computing methods.
This common software layer will enable companies and research institutions to create applications that utilize the full potential of each quantum hardware modality without adaptation. EuroQSS thus follows an approach similar to that of established software platforms in classical IT: the complexity of the underlying hardware is abstracted, while users benefit from a unified development and runtime environment. In addition, the project prepares the software stack for future fault-tolerant quantum computers and contributes to European standardization activities for quantum software.
The Fraunhofer Institute for Cognitive Systems IKS in Garching near Munich coordinates the project. It also contributes expertise in hybrid quantum-classical applications and application-driven benchmarking.
The Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Mathematics ITWM (Kaiserslautern) focuses on enhancing EuroQSS's robust hybrid computing framework, advancing core compilation capabilities, and strategically including Quantum Error Correction features.
A total of 13 European partners is participating in EuroQSS, representing France, Germany, Spain, Sweden, Finland, Austria, and the Czech Republic. The project will run for three years and conclude in September 2029. EU funding for the project amounts to approximately five million euros.
EurQSS is an EU-funded research and innovation project comprising 13 participants: Qruise, Alice & Bob, Commissariat à l’énergie atomique et aux énergies alternatives, Airbus, Quandela (France); Fraunhofer Gesellschaft, Airbus, HQS Quantum Simulations (Germany); Alpine Quantum Technologies, AQT (Austria); FSAS Technologies (Spain); Chalmers University of Technology (Sweden); Cybersecurity Hub (Czech Republic); IQM Finland (Finland).
